A Map That Helps Search Engines Find Everything

Search engines discover most pages by following links, but link-following alone can miss pages that are buried deep in your site structure or recently published with few internal links pointing to them yet. A sitemap explicitly lists every URL you want indexed, giving crawlers a complete inventory instead of relying entirely on them stumbling across each page through navigation.

This generator takes a list of URLs and produces a valid XML sitemap with the standard fields search engines expect, ready to upload and submit to Google Search Console.

Priority Is Mostly Symbolic Now

Early search engine guidance suggested priority values meaningfully influenced crawl behavior. Google has since clarified it largely disregards this field. Including it is still good practice for completeness and for any other crawlers that might weight it differently, but don't expect setting your homepage to priority 1.0 to meaningfully change anything on its own.

Splitting Large Sites Across Multiple Sitemaps

The 50,000 URL and 50MB limits per file mean larger sites need to split their URLs across several sitemap files, then list those files in a sitemap index. For most small and medium sites well under that URL count, a single sitemap file generated here is all you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A sitemap helps Google discover your pages faster, but indexing decisions still depend on content quality, crawl budget, and whether Google considers the page worth indexing at all. A sitemap is a discovery aid, not an indexing guarantee.
Very little in practice. Google has stated it largely ignores the priority field for ranking purposes, treating it as a weak hint at best. It is still valid to include for completeness and for other search engines that may weight it differently.
Up to 50,000 URLs per sitemap file, with a 50MB uncompressed size limit. Larger sites split URLs across multiple sitemap files and reference them all in a sitemap index file.
Upload it to your site's root directory, then submit the URL through Google Search Console's Sitemaps section. You can also reference it in your robots.txt file so crawlers find it automatically.
No, only include pages you want indexed. Listing noindexed pages in your sitemap sends a contradictory signal to search engines and wastes part of your crawl budget on pages you don't want appearing in results.
