Adding Tax Versus Extracting Tax -- Different Math Entirely

Adding VAT to a tax-exclusive price is straightforward multiplication. Extracting the VAT amount already baked into a tax-inclusive price requires a different formula, since simply taking a percentage of the final price overstates the actual tax -- that percentage should apply to the smaller pre-tax base, not the inflated total.

Why the Extraction Formula Looks Different

If a price already includes 15% VAT, that price represents 115% of the original pre-tax amount. Dividing by 1.15 recovers the pre-tax base correctly; simply multiplying the tax-inclusive price by 0.15 would calculate 15% of the wrong (too large) number, producing an incorrect tax figure.

Universal Math, Locally Specific Rates

Whether your country calls it VAT, GST, or sales tax, the underlying percentage math is identical -- only the specific rate and what it's officially called differs. This calculator works correctly for any rate you enter, regardless of jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Price with VAT = Price x (1 + VAT% / 100). A $100 item with 15% VAT becomes $115 -- the VAT percentage adds directly on top of the pre-tax price.
Pre-tax Price = Price with VAT / (1 + VAT% / 100), then VAT Amount = Price with VAT - Pre-tax Price. This reverses the calculation when you only have the final tax-inclusive price and need to know how much was tax.
Taking 15% of a tax-inclusive price overstates the actual VAT amount, since that 15% should apply to the pre-tax base, not the already-inflated total. This is a common calculation mistake that this tool's reverse mode avoids.
The underlying math (adding or extracting a percentage) is universal and works for VAT, GST, or sales tax at any rate, regardless of which country or specific tax name applies -- you just need to know your applicable rate.
Bookkeeping and tax reporting often require knowing the pre-tax revenue and tax collected separately, even when customers see only the final tax-inclusive price -- this reverse calculation is exactly what that separation requires.
